Consumer VOICE Issue: SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2002

Voluntary Organization in Interest of Consumer Education (VOICE) conducted a comparative testing of refrigerators covering in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Calcutta. VOICE tested eight (8) brands of direct cool, 165 175 Litre refrigerators in accordance with the specifications lay down by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

The brand tested were Allwyn- Durocool, BPL C161, Godrej - Star, Kelvinator Master Cool. LG GR 1711 ASX, Samsung SRA 18N F0, Videocon - S 161 PP and Whirlpool Master.

Result

Videocon, Whirlpool and Allwyn are the Best-Buys for consumers. Videocon comes out marginally behind Whirlpool but excels in cooling and energy consumption criteria. Videocon is also most energy efficient by consuming just 0.60 kWh of energy in 24 hours, while Kelvinator consumes a mammoth 1.44 kWh of energy, exceeding the BIS prescribed maximum limit of 1.1 kWh/24hrs.
