Consumer VOICE Issue: JULY-AUGUST 2002

The toothpastes market has a very high MNC presence. VOICE (Voluntary Organisation in Interest of Consumer Education) has conducted comparative testing of 14 brands of toothpastes. Some are fluoridated, others are non-fluoridated, while some others claims to be Ayurvedic medicines. All toothpaste brands are either the white paste or gel type. The tests were carried out in an independent accredited laboratory in accordance with relevant Indian standards. The comparative testing programme is aimed at informing consumers of the Best Buys in terms of price and quality.

The organisation carried a comparative testing of 14 brands of toothpastes like Amar, Anchor, Babool, Cibaca Top, Close up, Colgate gel, Colgate, Forhans, Meswak, Aquafresh, Neem Active, Pepsodent, Promise and Vico Vajradanti.

Result

The most nominally priced brand, Cibaca Top emerged as the Best Buy ahead two Indian brands, Amar Strong and Neem Active. Indian brands occupy 3 positions in the Top Five brands of toothpaste.
